| Why Support Farmers'
Markets? |
- The
moment when a farm fresh product passes from farmer to
market customer is increasingly rare: most of us never meet
the people who grow our food.
- Buying
from farmers' markets supports small family farmers near
you. Without your support, many local farms risk extinction.
- Family
farms and farmers' markets employ local people.
- Farmers'
markets build community: market customers know their
neighbors.
- Farmers'
markets are an important part of thriving local business
districts.
- Eating
fresh, local fruits and vegetables contributes to good
health.
- Fresh,
local products have incomparable flavor and quality.
- Family
farms preserve the open space we, our children, and wild
animals crave and need.
- Local
farms grow a diversity of crops, ensuring crop biodiversity,
which is key to healthy ecosystems.
The Federation of
Massachusetts Farmers' Markets is a non-profit charitable
organization dedicated to ensuring that farmers' markets
provide these essential services and benefits for
Massachusetts communities. We have been working since 1978
to connect farms, families, and communities. In fact, we are
the only organization working state-wide on behalf of
farmers' markets and the communities in which they are
located.
However, FMFM cannot
and does not work alone. As a non-profit charitable
organization, we receive support from farmers, markets,
private grants, and municipal, state, and federal government
agencies. Yet none of these groups can fully fund our
work.
We also rely on the
generosity of individual donors who want to make sure that
fruits, vegetables, and other farm-fresh products continue
to move from farmers' hands to consumers' hands at their
neighborhood market.
We need your help to
keep Massachusetts farmers growing food for Massachusetts
residents like you - providing food sources close to home,
not 3,000 miles away.
We need your help to
ensure that Massachusetts farmers continue to earn their
livelihood from the land, simultaneously providing green
space for us all.
We need your help to
ensure that neighborhoods statewide continue to benefit
socially and economically from farmers' markets.
Most of all, we need
your help to make sure that all of us in Massachusetts, no
matter our economic status, get the fresh, local food we
value so much.
It costs $25 to
provide one hour of nutrition education at a market near
you. It costs $50 to train a market manager for one hour. It
costs $100 for an FMFM staffer to consult with a community
group for two hours about harnessing the power of a farmers'
market for their neighborhood. And it costs $175 to bring
your favorite farmers' market to you for just two hours each
week.
We need your help to
cover these and other expenses that are a part of making
sure farmers' markets happen in 130 (and counting!) locations across
the state.
