Mass Farmers Markets Celebrates 45 Years of Growing Farmers Markets

[Westborough, MA - August 24, 2023] - Mass Farmers Markets (MFM), the leading organization dedicated to the growth and sustainability of farmers markets across the Commonwealth, proudly announces its 45th anniversary. Founded in 1978, MFM has been instrumental in fostering the renaissance of consumer, farmer, and community interest in farmers markets, and continues to play a pivotal role in supporting these vital local food hubs.

MFM was established through a groundbreaking collaboration between the Massachusetts Department of Food & Agriculture (now Agricultural Resources), the University of Massachusetts at Amherst Extension Service, and visionary farmers from across the state. These founding members recognized the growing need for a central organization to ensure the long-term viability of farmers markets amidst a changing landscape.

"During our 45-year journey, Mass Farmers Markets has been at the forefront of supporting farmers markets, market managers, and the farming community," said Edith Murnane, Executive Director of Mass Farmers Markets. "We have provided invaluable guidance, resources, and advocacy to ensure the success of farmers markets across Massachusetts."

MFM has been unwavering in its commitment to supporting the existing 200+ farmers markets across Massachusetts. The organization provides valuable advisory and training services to farmers market managers, offering guidance on operational best practices and helping new markets navigate their establishment. MFM also assists in developing sustainability plans for the future, while offering marketing and technology recommendations to improve market visibility and accessibility. Additionally, the organization actively advocates for all Massachusetts farmers markets, ensuring their needs and contributions are recognized.

“Massachusetts farmers markets are the heart and soul of the Commonwealth’s agricultural community,” said MDAR Commissioner Ashley Randle. “They help keep farms sustainable, contribute to greater food security, and educate communities about our local food system. Thanks to Mass Farmers Markets’ 45 years of supporting these vibrant community spaces, the Commonwealth is a leader in direct-to-consumer agricultural sales.”

One of MFM's core missions is promoting and supporting food access and food security through farmers markets across the Commonwealth. The organization works tirelessly to implement statewide healthy food incentives, making fresh and nutritious food more accessible to all residents. MFM also advocates for increased grants and funding support for fresh food access, recognizing the vital role farmers markets play in addressing food insecurity in Massachusetts.

Recognizing the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in creating thriving food systems, Mass Farmers Markets has committed to becoming a more equitable and inclusive organization. Taking proactive steps toward this goal, MFM has partnered with the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce to participate in their Transformational DEI Certificate program.

In addition to its statewide efforts, Mass Farmers Markets manages four urban farmers markets, namely the Copley Square Farmers Market in Boston, Central Square Farmers Market in Cambridge, Davis Square Farmers Market in Somerville, and Kendall Square Farmers Market in Cambridge. These markets serve as vibrant community gathering spaces, connecting consumers directly with over 75 vendors representing the rich agricultural landscape of Massachusetts and greater New England. The markets showcase a diverse range of products from local farms, nurseries, bakeries, meat and seafood providers, cheese makers, and specialty food producers. By managing these markets, MFM contributes to the success of local food growers, producers, and food entrepreneurs, fostering a thriving local economy.

"As we celebrate our 45th year, we are incredibly proud of the impactful work we have achieved in supporting farmers markets across Massachusetts," said Murnane. "Our commitment to providing guidance, resources, and advocacy has not wavered. We remain dedicated to fostering vibrant markets, promoting food access, and strengthening our local communities."

Mass Farmers Markets continues to be a driving force in shaping the future of farmers markets and promoting sustainable agriculture in Massachusetts.
