Special Volunteer Roles (Ongoing Positions)

These roles are ongoing, long-term volunteer opportunities and are separate from short-term, Boston Cares shifts.

POP Club Activity Leader — Davis Square Farmers Market

Help kids discover the fun of fresh food and farmers markets!

POP (Power of Produce) Club Activity Leaders bring hands-on activities to life, helping children learn about fruits, vegetables, and healthy eating in a fun and welcoming environment.

Perfect for: People who enjoy working with kids, being outdoors, and supporting local food and farmers.

Responsibilities

Before the Market

  • Collaborate with the Market Manager to select or design an activity

  • Plan the activity setup

  • Occasionally transport materials to the market

At the Market

  • Set up the POP Club tent and activity table

  • Prepare materials and guide children through activities

  • Create a fun, friendly, and encouraging environment

Time Commitment

  • 1-hour planning session (Zoom/Google Meet) before the season

  • Weekly participation during July–August (8 weeks)

  • Wednesdays at Davis Square Market (exact hours TBD)

Volunteer Food Access Coordinator

📍 Seeking up to 4 volunteers for Central, Copley, and Davis markets

Help make farmers markets accessible to shoppers using SNAP and nutrition incentive programs.

Responsibilities

During the Market

  • Prepare bags with $15 SNAP + $15 match tokens

  • Greet and assist customers accessing SNAP benefits, explain benefits and procedures

  • Collect tokens and complete vendor reimbursement paperwork

  • Translate for non-English speaking customers (Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish, Haitian Creole), especially at Central Square Market

Training

  • DTA SNAP training required (covered by MFM)

Time Commitment

  • Peak hours during market days- can be flexible depending on volunteer capacity

Great for: Volunteers interested in food justice, nutrition access, and community outreach.

Marketing Volunteer

📍 Seeking volunteers for Central, Copley, Davis, Kendall, and Fish & Farm markets

Help capture the energy of our farmers markets and share it with the community!

Marketing Volunteers support our markets by creating engaging social media content, highlighting vendors and programming, and helping grow our online audience.

Perfect for: People interested in social media, photography, storytelling, and community events.

Responsibilities

Before / After the Market

  • Coordinate content plans with the Market Manager and marketing team

  • Upload photos and videos to shared drives for marketing use

  • Help brainstorm and plan social media content

  • Stay up to date with current social media trends

During the Market

  • Take photos and videos of vendors, customers, and market activities

  • Collect stories and short interviews from vendors and shoppers

  • Highlight weekly programming and vendor lineups

  • Promote vendor products, specials, and seasonal items

  • Help maintain Instagram and TikTok content for the markets

Community Engagement

  • Walk around the market with a clipboard to collect e-newsletter sign-ups

  • Encourage shoppers to stay connected with the market

Time Commitment

  • Market Day: Approximately 1–2 hours at the market

  • Offline Work: About 1 hour per week for uploading content and planning posts

Great for: Volunteers interested in social media marketing, content creation, and community storytelling.

These are market-day shifts available via the Boston Cares calendar.

Set-Up Crew (2 volunteers)

  • Unload storage, set up tents, assist vendors, prep SNAP tokens

Market Support (1 volunteer)

  • Customer service, social media content, hand out flyers, support activities

Take-Down Crew (2 volunteers)

  • Pack up, close out SNAP, store equipment

🗣️ Language Support Needed

We’re especially looking for volunteers fluent in:

  • Cantonese

  • Mandarin

  • Haitian Creole

  • Spanish

Language support ensures all shoppers feel welcome and can access programs and vendors.

Non-Market Volunteer Roles

Big E Volunteers (Fall 2025)

  • Help sell local Massachusetts cranberries at The Big E in Springfield

  • Largest fundraiser of the year; free pass provided

Fundraising Volunteers (Ongoing)

  • Assist with appeals, donor outreach, and campaigns

  • Gain nonprofit fundraising experience
