Central Square Farmers Market Celebrates 45th Season!

Cambridge, MA - Mass Farmers Markets, a non-profit organization that supports farmers markets across Massachusetts, is proud to announce the 45th anniversary of the Central Square Farmers Market. For 45 years, the market has provided fresh, local and delicious food to the community, making it a cornerstone of this vibrant community.

The Central Square Farmers Market was launched in 1978 as part of an initiative to develop direct to consumer economic marketplaces for Massachusetts farmers. The success of the Market has achieved much more than expected. It has contributed to the preservation of farmland and provided untold environmental benefits. It has become a hub for neighbors, incubated small businesses, and provided foot traffic that increases street safety and revenue for local businesses.

"We are thrilled to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the Central Square Farmers Market," said Edith Murnane, Executive Director of Mass Farmers Markets. "The market has been a vital part of the community, providing access to fresh, healthy food and supporting local farmers for almost half a century. 45 years is a milestone that sadly most farmers markets don't achieve, which is why this anniversary is so remarkable. We look forward to many more years in this community."

The success of the market is due primarily to strong partnerships nurtured over decades, including with the City of Cambridge, the Central Square BID, and the Cambridge Community Foundation.

The Central Square Farmers Market will open for the season on Monday, May 15th at 12 pm. To celebrate the opening, an official ribbon cutting ceremony will take place. Alana Mallon, Vice-Mayor of the City of Cambridge and Michael Monestime, Executive Director at the Central Square Business Improvement District, will jointly cut the ribbon.

“Farmers markets play an important role in building resilient local food systems and vibrant communities,” said Michael Monestime, Executive Director of Central Square BID. “The Mass Farmers Markets, Central location, adds to the vitality of the Central Square Cultural District. Come shop local every Monday thru November.”

The Central Square Farmers Market will be open for the 2023 season every Monday from 12-6 PM from May 15 to Nov 20, 2023. SNAP, HIP, and SNAP Match will be available. The market is located at Norfolk St. & Bishop Allen Dr. Cambridge MA 02139.
